Anthracite coal used for home heating purposes is uniformly sized to the following dimensions. The different sizes are used in different applications. The larger sizes consisting of stove, chestnut and pea are typically used in hand fired applications.

A Menzies Cone is used to separate crushed anthracite coal from rock. Inside the cone is slurry mixture of water and magnetite. The magnetite slurry has a high specific gravity. This allows the lighter coal to float, the rock and coal with a lot of rock in it sinks.

Feb 22, 2010 · a good grade of KY coal will surpass the characteristics of anthracite. Less ash, much more heat, faster and easier to build a fire, yet a smooth controllable burn: it will often have lower sulfur than anthracite (sometimes less than .5%) and burn longer.

Smaller sized anthracite coal like rice will have more volume than larger sizes like chestnut. This may sound counter-intuitive but smaller sizes have much more surface area than larger sizes. The air gaps between the coal may be smaller but the total volume of the those air gaps is a lot more because they occur so much more.
