Former NBA player Michael Carter-Williams is hoping to get a WNBA franchise in Boston whether it's through expansion or being a destination for a current team that wants to move. He's part of The Boston Women’s Basketball Partners group that is spearheading the initiative.

To establish a WNBA team, Boston Women’s Basketball Partners needs to officially apply for a team, be approved by WNBA owners and pay an expansion fee. While the exact amount of the necessary fee is unknown, in Cleveland, the latest city to land a WNBA team, the ownership group behind the franchise paid a record $250 million expansion fee.

Boston could get another pro sports franchise — a WNBA women’s basketball team — if an ownership group with Massachusetts roots is successful.
