While National Institutes of Health research funding is still flowing to Kentucky, the uncertainty surrounding the dollars is already having effects — with the University of Louisville instituting a hiring freeze through the summer and possibly beyond.

An immediate pause has been placed on all permanent and temporary full-time faculty and staff positions from now until July 15.

Given the volatility, uncertainty and potential impact on UofL’s financial situation, the university is being proactive,” University President Kim Schatzel said.

The University of Louisville will pause hiring due to concerns about how a new NIH funding policy will impact the university's budget.

UofL also will suspend expenditures of departmental research incentive funds (D-RIF) and encourage faculty to limit expenditures of individual research incentive funds (I-RIF) citing uncertainty over Trump administration executive orders.
