Heavy rain is set to pour for a huge 32 hours and drench some areas of the UK. The rainfall, coupled with 'snow melt', could lead to flooding in some parts. According to the Met Office, there could be 'difficult' driving conditions, along with delays to public transport.
The Met Office has recorded the lowest temperature of the winter so far in the UK at -12.5C. The village of Marham in Norfolk in east England marked the coldest place in the country on Monday night, followed by Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands, which reached -11.2C.
The Met Office is urging UK homeowners to ensure they have a sufficient stock of various household essentials readily available, as harsher weather is on the way. It has been an incredibly cold start to the week, with temperatures plunging close to freezing, triggering snow and ice across much of the country.
Met Office meteorologists have warned that a rare weather event could lead to hazardous 'black ice'. 'Freezing rain' is a phenomenon which is not seen often in the UK but current wintry conditions could bring it to parts of Britain. It happens when rainfall freezes on impact, coating everything instantly in a layer of clear ice.
The amber warning covers parts of the East Midlands, South West England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber. A separate amber warning for wind has also been issued and will come into effect from 4pm today until 11pm, affecting parts of South West England.
