The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday the agencies were investigating a multi-state outbreak of listeria infections linked to frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc.

The FDA says an onsite investigation at Prairie Farms Dairy revealed three environmental swabs taken in the processing area tested positive for listeria monocytogenes.

Cartons of frozen shakes sold to nursing homes and other institutions are being recalled after an outbreak of listeria linked to the products. The supplement shakes were sold to hospitals and long-term care facilities, including nursing homes. There is a nationwide recall for the ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. Twelve deaths associated with the listeria outbreak have been linked to the shakes.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide, including to hospitals and long-term care facilities. The outbreak has sickened 38 people.
