There is a new person in charge of the Padres. Or there will be. Major League Baseball owners voted Thursday to approve John Seidler as control person of the Padres. Usually, such a vote involves a transfer of ownership.

If appointed, John Seidler will simultaneously succeed Matt Seidler as trustee and Eric Kutsenda as Padres chairman. Seidler, 65, could soon oversee a team that won 93 games last season and took the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers to the brink in the National League Division Series.

The vote to give John Seidler control of the Padres was unanimous, coming after a lawsuit by Peter Seidler's widow to gain stewardship of the franchise.
