ESPN's John Keim first reported on Sunday that the Commanders agreed to a deal with the District of Columbia to build a new stadium where RFK Stadium still stands. The franchise played at RFK Stadium from 1961 to 1996 and won all three of its Super Bowls during that span.

Washington’s NFL franchise is set to return to the nation’s capital as part of an agreement between the organization and the District of Columbia government to build on the site of the old RFK Stadium.

The Commanders are currently under contract to play at Northwest Stadium in Maryland until early in the 2027 season, but can extend that deal until the new home is officially constructed. Team owner Josh Harris has said he is eyeing 2030 as a target opening date, per ESPN.
