AMERICA’S HUNGER for Greenland is setting off an explosive row within NATO.  President Donald Trump, infuriated by European allies’ resistance to his effort to annex the autonomous Danish territory, said on January 17th that he would impose 10% tariffs on imports from eight European countries that had sent troops there two days earlier.

Trump’s move has triggered alarm across European capitals, raising concerns about a new strain on transatlantic relations and exposing fresh fault lines within NATO at a time of heightened geopolitical tension in the Arctic.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that soliders are in Greenland to take part in a joint military exercise as Trump continues his push to take over the island.

The Arctic is rapidly becoming a front line for NATO competition with Russia and China, as adversaries expand their presence in the High North and probe alliance defenses, the top American general in Europe said.

It’s not for peaceful purposes,” U,S, Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich said. “They’re not studying the seals and the polar bears."
