What started as a car crash in Rockwood, Tennessee, back in 2019 has led to a federal investigation into a major Mexican drug operation. While the federal case is ongoing, the Justice Department unsealed indictments connected to the investigation on Thursday.
Roberto Martinez-Cabrera of Kennewick was sentenced by U.S. Judge Mary Dimke to 10 years in prison and five years probation for conspiracy to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and distributing 40 grams or more of fentanyl.
Mexico's security chief Omar García Harfuch and US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the deal in separate statements.
The DOJ transferred 14 Mexican drug offenders to Mexico, saving over $4 million and easing federal prison overcrowding.
The sanctions on Cárteles Unidos and Los Viagras come after recent sanctions on alleged members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel.
