Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s (D-Va.) gubernatorial campaign rolled out an ad Wednesday focused on lowering costs in Virginia, marking less than one month before early voting kicks off ahead of November’s elections.
D emocrat Abigail Spanberger won the endorsement of a police organization that backed GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin in his 2021 run, as polls suggest Spanberger has carved out a polling lead over her Republican rival, Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Newsweek reached out to the Spanberger and Earle-Sears campaigns for comment via email.
The hubbub in Virginia politics this week was that Winsome Earle-Sears had run screaming like her hair was on fire from a debate sponsored by AARP Virginia.

A MAGA Twitter account tried to attack Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger this week by circulating an old photo of her wearing what looked like a bulky plastic mask, implying she was overly fearful about COVID, as if protecting oneself from a viral outbreak mismanaged by Trump is some sort of problem.
The poll, which surveyed 702 Virginia residents from August 11 to August 15, 2025, found Spanberger leading Earle-Sears by seven points (46 percent to 39 percent), a narrower margin than the 17-point lead Spanberger held in the May poll (43 percent to 26 percent).
The AFL-CIO is not endorsing Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic candidate for governor. The decision comes in the wake of her announcement that she opposes efforts to overturn Virginia's "right to work" law.
